I agree that their actions are inexcusable, even if legal and that they are - for the most part - despicable human beings. I don't even think they really hate anything at this point - they're just media whores and trolls.
Still - on the global scale of religious nuts, they're a mild annoyance, at least from my point of view.

Something else just occurred to me while reading Jacob's companion piece to this. Maybe it's a linguistic thing, but wouldn't it be a layer of unintentional bad taste to picket Leonard Nimoy's funeral with "God hates fags" signs?

The WBC are hyper Calvinists. I have noticed that a lot of the more extreme Christian fundamentalist are all Calvinists. Of course, not all Calvinists are crazy extremists.
A few years back, I watched a British documentary on WBC and one of Phelp's granddaughters said that her family would not be upset if she got hit by a car because it would mean that she wasn't one of the elect. That is a very sad way to be brought up.
They send their children to public school which surprises me but I think that the experience must make the children feel even more isolated and hated. If I remember correctly the group interpreted being hated to mean that they are doing the right thing. The bible does provide a cover for being hated.

If I understand their thinking, as Calvinists, they don't really believe that they have any influence on whether someone is saved. The rest of the world is doomed anyway and most of humanity will be tortured for an eternity. However, they were commanded to preach to the world so none of us could say that we weren't warned. On line, I have met some Calvinists with similar thinking, they just don't bring attention to their more obnoxious beliefs but if you push them, they still express similar thoughts.

Maybe, but it seems unlikely. People who are willing to commit crimes - even the psychotic ones - usually know better than to shout about it in the streets beforehand. Westboro Baptists are wackos, but they're famous wackos. They know that if there's ever even a shred of suspicion on them, for a crime that would appear to suit their "profile" - they'd be risking lynching, not to mention fierce criminal prosecution.
I'd worry much more about those religious extremists, who sit quietly and polish their guns...

Just lay a minefield around where the funeral is being held. Put up signs so that the WBC guys know; they don't have to endanger themselves, but we'll see just how devoted they are to their particular god then.
