yes, there are worse groups out there. Right here in the US, we've got people bombing clinics, and doing other terrorist acts that hurt people more than just emotionally.
I don't really like defending the WBC. They're bad, and deserving of ridicule. However, until they start destroying property and killing people, ridicule is as far as i would go.

Oh, I don't think allowing them free speech is defending them at all.
I think of it as giving them enough rope so's they can hang themselves..

I know it's been done but I'd hold a sign saying, "God hates FIGS!" with the reference to when Jesus said "may no one ever eat from you again" to a fig tree.
I'd dress up in a clown suit and be "Phelpsie the Clown" and try to protest with them but always correct them,
"No, no, figs! FIGS! Jesus said not to eat figs anymore. And yet we Americans tolerate fig eaters. That's why bad things are happening to us. Sheesh, do I have to draw you people a map?"

I'd hold a big white towel with a blood stain at the bottom, and printed with
SHIRLEY'S UNCLEAN TILL SUNSET !!
