WASHINGTON (AP) — In a major victory for President Barack Obama, the Republican-led House relented on Tuesday and will back legislation to fund the Homeland Security Department through the end of the budget year, without restrictions on immigration.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, outlined the dwindling options for his deeply divided GOP caucus on Tuesday morning after the Senate left the House with little choice. Boehner pointed out that the issue is now in the hands of the courts.

Maybe we shouldn't have a homeland security department anyway. This was a bullshit department created by Bush and company that does all kinds of unnecessary shit. It used to be that good liberals were against it and if they voted to defund it you and Jon Stewart would call them brave. Now that they have the presidency the tables are flipped and voting to defund it becomes some sort of evil thing. This only works if people have 0 political memory.

You know how Jon Stewart loves to bring up old Fox News footage to show people being hypocrits, well here is him in 2002 mocking the creation of the Department of homeland security.

The difference between that and this is that they were against conglomerating all of the parts of what is now DHS into one big new bureaucratic clusterfuck.

The Republicans were trying to blackmail the presidency by threatening to make the American people less safe. They spend so much time telling us how much of a threat ISIS is here in America and how little Obama is doing while at the same time shutting down the Coast Guard, the TSA, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Dept., etc. And, comically, defunding the very entities that secure the border that they are so concerned about.
