It's what happens when you listen to fucking mohammed instead of Jefferson.

This is a big reason why the politicians who want to turn this country into a theocracy scare me. Some of them may not want to use the word theocracy, but if they start talking about "god's law" and wanting the president to be on his knees praying, that's a theocracy. If you want one of those, head to Saudi Arabia.

I lived in Iran from 1974 to 1978. A typical street scene included head-to-toe chadores showing only eyes, to beautiful women unafraid to walk in miniskirts right next to their veiled sisters. It was a healthy, heterogeneous society that was tolerant of a wide range of behavior.

What happened? There was a marriage of convenience between the mullahs, on one side, and the Tudeh Party -- the Iranian communist party -- who worked with each other to overthrow the Shah, in January of 1979. (I saw the most of that revolution personally, leaving the country in December 1978). When the Revolution succeeded, the mullahs were in a better position to exert power than were the Tudeh, because while the Tudeh had been outlawed and pursued by the SAVAK, the mullahs were tolerated due to the imperial government's fear of alienating the religious. Because the mullahs were able to disseminate the message of Khomeini, whom they admired even throughout his exile, the people looked on the clergy as the prime mover in the overthrow, and so beginning in April of 1979 and going on for a few years thereafter, the new regime felt comfortable moving against their atheist Tudeh allies, and they did, with a vengeance, imprisoning, torturing, and then killing them.

The people of Iran are not nearly so conservative as their government, but given the stilted constitutional structure of their government, they cannot give voice to their own moderate leanings without courting violent repression.

2 things:

1. The top picture pretty much represented only a small westernized elite in Tehran from 1960-1970s. The bottom picture, likely showing two university educated women, actually represent attitudes considerably more liberal than would have prevailed in vast majority of Iran outside Tehran even during the same 1960-1970s Period. So Iran didn't go from the top scene to the bottom scene. Rather the top scene was never more than a very thin veneer. In bulk they went form a situation where the top scene is a tiny minority, and the majority was much more conservative than the bottom scene, to where the bottom scene, where higher education is accessible to women in general, has become arguably reasonably representative of the country.

2. The attitude illustrated by the second picture Is still so much more liberal than what prevails in much of Sunni Arabia, even amongst our dearest allies in that region. Iran had a long continuous history of indigenous, illustrious, centralized, and highly refined civilization long before the arrival of the blight of Islam, and it shows. Much of Sunni Arabia didn't, and it too shows. The much maligned Iranian theocracy might be said to be equivalent in social outlook to something a little more enlightened than the more enlightened parts of 19th century europe. Much of the social outlook in much of Sunni Arabia is more like less enlightened parts of 13th century Europe. In Iran the Shiite theocracy has actually made progress towards modernity since 1979. Where else can you say this of any theocracy?

So the lesson is in Iran, real and deep seated progress is subtle, but is there, although it is hard to discern them through the lingering resentment from the hostage crisis, and high decibel, low IQ Israeli, neoconservatives and evengelical Christian propaganda.

Those were of mostly middle class people not the lower classes. It would be like looking at picture from the 60s of the white middle class in the Southern state of America and assuming all was well in the South.
