So... is it safe to assume that self-mutilation is a common practice among religions?
Yes, but not every religion recommends or endorses such things. Being common and being universal are, of course, not the same.
You can search for "genital mutilation" and find some more sickening things, that are far, far more disgusting than people volunteering to be crucified. The most disgusting things are the things forced on others without their consent.

True. I think I'll spare myself the horror, though. Just reading this article made me uneasy. I honestly don't know how any of the spectators can stomach it, but I suppose it depends on the person.

I noticed that the Hispanic community who are staunch catholics didn't the same thing. I hoped that the pope would do the same thing, but he is no more religious than I am.

When I was a boy living in Iran, the last Friday of Ramadan was a fairly bloody affair, with the faithful flogging themselves with chains and other implements until their backs bled.

"Yeah, see Jesus? It's not a big deal. Even a normal human man can do this willfully. What else ya got?"
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."
For context, this is the previous verse:
"Hi Jesus" -robvalue

I don't really know how to respond. It's scary that a human being can be driven to do something like that to themselves.
A lot of the self-mutilation, if I understand correctly, is done to repent for sins somehow. Now that's very deep self-loathing that leads to self-harm. That kind of behavior is typical for a range of mental disorders, yet, as evidenced here, common among religious. It's a case of what came first, the chicken or the egg -- were these individuals prone to self-harm outside of their beliefs, or did their beliefs drive them to having such desires? Either way, it's extremely disturbing,

Didn't you grow up in Texas?
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.

Oh, that's definitely what it is. I just wanted to illustrate how these things sort of take away from his great sacrifice.
It wouldn't be hard to convince me that it's pitfalls like this that caused Muslims to strip away all of Allah's humanity. Without Christianity as a precursor, I think Allah would look a lot like Yahweh. What follows from needing a god with no human traits is a total lack of respect for humans. The only way to keep Allah on high is to tear humans down.
