I am thinking you must need massive server usage for such a venture.

Personally I'd be more interested in the game if it a tactical game based on the religions already existing today.
Sort of like how command and conquer or civilization use nations and civilizations that already exist today.
So just as brief ideas, I'd say to make the teams equal it would be like command and conquer, where one team relies more on brute strength and crude first strike assault tactics, another team could use more advanced techniques but which require more time to build up.
So maybe Christianity is a team that has better technology to move around the map quicker using ships and conquest, but Islam can produce more followers quicker, Jews have a higher money gaining capability.
Also I don't think atheists should be a team, I would have thought atheists would be more like the barbarians in civilization. So you might get a warning all of a sudden saying a piece of land under your control is being influenced by atheism and you have to try and stop it happening using coercive methods or peaceful persuasion. So are you going to send in the suicide bombers or the apologists, the charity workers, or the evangelists/televangelists.
Also if your religion becomes too big you get warnings that your followers are going to break off into a new group with a new leader, so I might be Paul leader of the Christians and I'd get warnings saying my followers in Africa are following a new leader Joseph Kony, or in america and they are following Joseph Smith.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.

For those of you in the thread who wanted to alpha test, although I'm not quite ready to start alpha testing, but I thought it would be a good idea to have a dedicated forum for discussing the game (ideas, etc.) and for eventual bug reports when testing commences.
If you are interested in being an alpha tester, please PM me and I'll send you the link to the forum.
Thanks.
