Observations On Atheism Part II - God And The Bible

Often taken to mean the earth is flat.

Did I mention I have had these sorts of discussions before? If I say to you I am going to travel to the four corners of the world do you take that to mean that I think that the earth is flat?

The Bible says that the Earth is round. Or a globe, circle, spherical. Isaiah 40:22.

Do we not say that the sun rises and sets even today? Where does the sun rise? Where does it set? What we mean isn't that the sun is moving but describing the observation from a human perspective on earth and the apparent rising and setting of the sun.

It isn't a question of translation, it is a question of expression which isn't really that different form ours.

If you really think I'm illogical then, ok, that's weird, I like to believe I think fairly rationally. And I would turn around your point about you criticizing something you know nothing about and point it right back at you- you've blatantly called the theory of evolution "bullshit," contradicting the VAST majority of biologists, geologists and paleontologists who actually have experience in the field and actually have reason to believe the theory of evolution is correct in explaining the facts of evolution.

I have decided that I have to be more articulate and concise and less emotionally involved with these discussions in order to get what I want out of them.

I'm failing to see your evidence for the bible being "his word". You just make this assumption, probably under the impression that nobody will call you on it? Well considered yourself called Tongue. Any evidence that the bible is God's word?

In another thread where I was beginning a discussion designed specifically for me to learn what atheist thought about evolution, you told me to go away and learn about it or shut up.

Why shouldn't I give you the same advice about the Bible?

EvF, you know nothing about God so your opinion on him is moot. At least I am willing to learn your theoretical science.

I provided you with links. Give me some links and I'll look into it.
OR I'll ignore the links and ignore everything you say, just like you do to me Angel

I don't have any links. I took my website down. And I don't ignore everything you say.

You know nothing about God either. There's almost certainly no God to know anything about! How could you know him or his mind considering this? Ffs. Tongue
At least I understand the burden of proof. You have to give evidence. Not me. That is if anyone is going to give evidence at all.
You know no more about "God" than me. You simply read a book about God that has no evidence of its truth. Its got nothing to do with any real God. There is no evidence of a real God, a supernatural God.

Daystar- do you really think that in the time the Bible was written people thought the earth was round? How would they take "the four corners of the earth?" Isaiah 40:22 says nothing about dimension, and in fact reinforces my point- the earth is a circle, with "the Heavens" spread out like a canopy above it- this is plainly thinking of the earth as a flat place where heaven is directly above. Not a sphere. The sun is the same idea, and almost all ancient cultures thought this way, that the sun was moving around the earth. It has nothing to do with expressions. Egyptians thought the sun was a god riding across the sky. A quick google search yields 68 sun gods. And why not? The sun brings life, warmth, everything. But nobody knew until Copernicus that the earth was moving around the sun (although some scholars, but not christian ones, postulated that perhaps this could be so). But before him the prevailing idea was Ptolemaic.

And obviously if you were to use the expression now, I would understand that you meant all over the earth. But the expression itself is FROM the bible, where it literally meant the four corners of a flat earth. These expressions are only expressions now, but they came from what was thought to be correct.

The ancient Greeks before the bible knew the world was round though according to QITongue,
The ancient greeks were pretty smart for their time.

Anyway, everybody knows the Earth is really a small stellated dodecahedron. Just look how pointy some of those mountains are.... ouch!

Actually I mean the Ancient Greeks knew the earth was a sphere apparently. Not just round. I don't mean a flat circle like a disc or anything in case anyone thinks so because I chose the wrong wordRolleyes

Well a philosopher or two may have postulated it but I am unsure how widely that was accepted? Especially in the western world where people evidently believed you could just sail off the edge. Which, admittedly, would be really sweet.

Yeah, it would be good to have some more info on that. Maybe I should have a look in my QI book of general ignorance (GI)Smile
