First of all, I think the researchers were a bit optimistic when stating they successfully turned the rats gay, they "successfully" made some rats have a preference for sex with male rats for a maximum period of a few weeks, some only for a few days.

I'm a little confused by your statement.
Either way, there are quite a few different species of animals that engage in varying degrees of homosexuality. I have no doubt early hominids did as well.

I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
