Inconsistencies in the story sort of grind your gears, you know?
We know the premise of the book is invalid, but one can suspense disbelief while reading it (just like watching a Marvel movie) and then see how it pans out.... but these inconsistencies are a nag.

I'd say that it wasn't Moses alone who slaughtered those thousands.... I'm guessing he had a posse.... and that was composed of those other people who survived and let him get away with it, as they were in on it.

There were a couple of revolts after Moses went on his killing spree but the rebels were incompetent.

God murder is "different".

Its my understanding that they were still worshiping "the god of Israel, who had delivered them from Egypt" (its been a while since I read the story but I'm sure that's what they say when they're making the calf) and they were basically killed for making a graven image and breaking the second commandment. A commandment none of them had even heard at the time...

According to the fairy tale Moses had actually verbally told his herd not to make any graven images in Exodus 20:1-5.  When he went on his killing spree in Exodus chapter 32 the law was written on the stone tablets that he broke.  That was much later after he had first said it.

Don't make any images of other stuff! I'm really scared you might pay attention to them more than me! Yes, I'm that insecure and insignificant!

And hey, don't you go talking to those other gods. Of which there aren't any of course. But don't talk to them. They smell. Please don't talk to them because you might like them more than me and then I'll be sad and lonely.

Oh yeah, don't steal, don't eat shellfish, yada yada whatever. Slavery? No that's fine. It was different back then. I mean now. It's different now.

Yet god killed the world one time over plus more and told the Hebrews to kill all the settlers in the land they were invading. Told them to leave no survivors. And told them to steal and pillage the areas they took over.... Great guy...

The most people who believe in God believe that there is a life in heaven or hell after death. God is seen as the one who decides about your life and death. But only God. And because you are not God, you can't kill someone.

"Thou shall not kill ... unless you do it in my name or think I told you to, or can justify it by my other rules"  would be more accurate

If it is hypocritical or not, the rules are there to help you to live a good life. And if it says do not kill, and people are not killing each other because of the rules, than what is the big problem.
