Actually, no, the fact that they didn't choose the predicament they're in should tell you quite clearly that they can't get out of it "of their own volition" - whatever that means. The depressed have no more of a hard time freeing themselves of their own hardships than the people you describe. Just as you can't help complaining about them and I can't help but write this to you - or I might change my mind, delete this and ignore your last reply to me in this thread, in which case, it still wouldn't be "my own choice" to do so.
