Ole Jimi rubs some folks the wrong way, it's no big deal. Genius though he was, it's still about personal taste. Me, I don't get how someone gets a headache from "Castles Made of Sand", or "Third Stone from the Sun", but then I don't get why Britney Spears had a thriving career, either. This is probably why my biggest gig was in front of three hundred people, and not 30,000.
Glad to see some love for the Cars. Pop though they were, their first four albums were really, really good, to my ears. Like any band, they hand clunkers in the catalog, but they rocked without being long-winded, they wrote great melodies that weren't cloying, and their lyrics could sometimes be amazing. Anyway, Steely Dan -- huge fan here, saw them in Santa Barbara back in 2003, think the world of them as songwriters. SoundGarden was going to be in my first three. Badmotorfinger would be my choice for the best album of the 90s, no doubt. Eric Johnson is simply amazing musician. Saw him in 1991, he killed it. He's better live than on record: Jeff Beck, a huge influence on my playing: And Brian, props for mentioning Vernon Reid, he's another huge influence on my playing and LC's first two albums blew my ears open completely. You need to look, not listen, and then it starts making more sense. She looks a lot better than the ugly guys some people are listing in this thread. Take another look at the opening post. It is asking about your top three pop/rock musicians. But it does not specify that they be your top three for how they sound. And that explains an earlier list that someone else posted, as all three of that person's picks are much prettier than most of those who have been selected by others. Different people have different taste on looks, just like they have different taste on music. Also, in the case of Britney Spears, she was quite young when she was first becoming popular. Although some of her fans were probably creepy older men, she was more appealing to a very young audience than older people tend to be. For many years now, it is primarily the very young who have been driving popularity when it comes to musicians. Keep in mind, I am only explaining her as a choice; she was not my choice (which, thus far, I have not given for this thread). If popularity among musicians were only about the music, there would likely be no dancing or skimpy clothing involved.
