2015 UK General Election
RE: 2015 UK General Election
^^

Spot on. People who tout the fiscal pros ignore the fiscal cons, such as the Duchy of Cornwall which makes an undisclosed sum (sure to be vast) from investments solely to benefit Charles et al directly from tax payers. We don't see a penny, but the Duchy owns a vast portfolio of businesses and land.

Oh, and no tax. How fair.

No sorry, that wasa mistake. It does publish an annual account but there's speculation that it doesn't give a true picture of the various subsidiaries and other investments the Duchy is involved in.

It competes with other businesses in various fields but pays on tax (capital gains and corporation).

*fixed

Indeed. And that's only in the UK. If we also take in to consideration the money the Crown makes from land & businesses owned elsewhere in the Commonwealth, where little/no argument can be made regarding the value of 'royal tourism', the case against their existence becomes even stronger.

Indeed France is the most visited country in Europe and famously beheaded their nobility.
People don't come to see the queen, they come to see Buckingham Palace.

I guess you now know what to do if you want to increase tourism.

To quote a recent handsome and wise fellow whose name escapes me:

These tourists only ever get to see the buildings, the palaces and whatnot. Are they really so shallow that they only show up because someone they themselves would most likely object to having in their country lives inside?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

As regards the Royal family, I'm a Jacobite:-
"Whosoever has the favour of Parliament shall be Monarch"
see; "Glorious Revolution" and Abdication of Edward VII
As it stands the monarchy is a fig-leaf for Parliament who have far less integrity than Royals.
