All I saw when scanning through the thread was OP coming back to thank everyone for their contributions and saying that it has helped alleviate the stressors that they have been feeling. I personally know a family that certainly suffered through a number of mental illnesses including depressive illnesses; and when they began going to a church again (not my old church - another one) it was quite remarkable to see the level of kindness and support shown to them from their new congregation. And it made a very real and positive effect in their lives, that I and others could clearly recognise. And I know how vulnerable to that family losing the support of their congregation would be to their ongoing health and happiness, and I certainly wouldn't ever try to interfere with their clearly effective social-support structure on the basis that I disagree with the validity of the Christian gospel. I see a similar thing in the thread you've posted - this person (the OP) may be quite vulnerable to social isolation and other harms if they were to leave their church. All I saw in the thread was people who were trying to be supportive and accepting of the OP - support and acceptance may be things that this person really needs. They're not trying to indoctrinate the OP, the OP already has their own faith in the Christian God. My advice to you Tubby is to be very careful when you judge others - you could end up doing more harm than good. RE: Indoctrination by internet

Perhaps sickening is a strong word. I don't doubt that the intentions of the forum are good (in their eyes). What I see is a young person slowly slipping into delusion and being encouraged to do so. Just because it helps him fit into the group doesn't make it right and doesn't mean he will be better off in the long term.
It's not me that's doling out the advice. (May 9, 2015 at 5:06 pm)Minimalist Wrote:Quote: As you grow as a Christian you will learn that scripture is God's provision for us. That is because god never changes. The one provision in life is that change is inevitable. Religion does not allow for that provision.

He's asking for help, and the answers he is given are that his happiness, his whole LIFE don't matter except as a slave to god. It's sick, and sad. It makes me angry, too. My grandmother passed away about three months ago. At the funeral, there was a whole bunch of "she's in a better place, now" sayings, and I expected that. What pissed me off was the repeated assertions that the best thing she ever did in her life was accepting Jesus. They spent five or more minutes of the funeral shitting all over her memory by saying none of it really mattered, anyway. On a semi-positive note, that part of the funeral did keep me from crying. |
