Souls?

That definitely does not describe an afterlife that I want to go to. And that right there is a 50% side effect of contracting a soul.

No thanks.

But how can souls burn? Aren't souls supposed to be immaterial?
These are the kinds of question that made me doubt the existence of heaven/hell in the first place.

In the book of Revelations, Heaven (a.k.a New Jerusalem) is described as a very physical place and that always bothered me  Dodgy
It describes streets of gold and walls made of precious stones. It also describes twelve gates that are always open.

But why would there be walls if there is nothing to protect (what else can we assume if the gates are always open)? They seem to be pointless and how can a flawless perfect god create something imperfect?

They probably burn in immaterial fire...

You have to cut the author some slack, I wouldn't be making any sense either if I was high on shrooms.

By design, souls cannot be destroyed but they CAN feel pain. How could hell work any other way ??

And this pain is nothing like what you've experienced on earth. It is all proportional. Burn your finger on a hot pan in the kitchen and it really hurts, do it in hell, and the hot pan could be at a temperature of a billion degrees; the pain will be in proportion.

You simply cannot imagine it. Imagine an enema of quadrillion degree molten neutronium!! And you FEEL EVERY DEGREE OF THAT HEAT in your rectum !!!!!

People need to realize that as an infinite being, God can become INFINITELY pissed at you for even the slightest transgression. That is why the torments in hell are going to be so dreadful. And no matter how hard I try to share with you slackers how bad it's going to be in hell, we all know I am falling short, in fact, infinitely short of how truly terrible it will be.

@dahrling, that particular bit would make good sci fi.  When I read the new jerusalem bits it seems to describe a colony ship, complete with comms towers - positional and directional lighting...and of course recall those angels with fire under their wings and helmets made of clear crystal that speak through boxes atop their heads.  Cockpit/loudspeaker combo baby.. HOOAH

Whose got that sweet, sweet Tsoukalos hair pic ready?

I am thinking Borg ship.
  • REV 21:9     And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.
(Why was the angel carrying around these vials of virulent viruses anyway?)
  • REV 21:10    And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
(In the infamous words of Captain James T. Kirk, "Excuse me, but why does God need a spaceship?)
  • REV 21:11    Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
  • REV 21:12    And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
  • REV 21:13    On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
  • REV 21:14    And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
  • REV 21:15    And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
  • REV 21:16    And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
(A furlong is one eighth of a mile.  That makes the 'City of Jerusalem' a cube about 1500 MILES by 1500 MILES by 1500 MILES. The moon has a diameter of 2158 miles)
  • REV 21:17    And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
(A cubit is about 18 inches which would make the walls just over 200 feet thick.)

RE: Souls?
Alot of people believe in souls, probably more then believe in a God, but the concept of a soul brings up more questions then it answers.

When did the soul develop in our evolutionary history? Most people don't think that animals have souls, just humans. So when did we go from without souls to with souls? Also what evolutionary advantage does having a soul give us?

Where exactly does the soul reside? We have been cutting up and examining corpses for centuries now but nobody has documented a human soul yet.

What is the soul made of?

Are all souls created equal? Most humans have at least a small variation in the size, weight, and efficiency between each other when it comes to their organs.

Are some humans born without souls? Some babies are born without developed hearts and lungs so are some born without souls?

What exactly is the purpose of our soul? Or is it like our appendix and just sits there without any use for it.

If our soul is meant for the afterlife then which afterlife is correct? There have been hundreds of different proposed afterlife's each with different requirements to get in.

RE: Souls?
Soul either means something about our concept of self or it is just hocus locus bullshit. It's allegory not science.
