Ask ze German
RE: Ask ze German
No, but the wine used to be good, and so were the trains. If you let your standards slip in one area, maybe you let them slip in another.

To be fair, the german train system is huge and horribly intricate, and budged cuts have left DB with dangerously little buffer overhead to compensate for mishaps. So delays of a quarter hour or so are frequent nowadays. Still, one can travel more or less reliably.

15 minutes?! 15?! We'll talk when your train is late over an hour and then stops for another hour halfway to the destination

No speed limit in places on the autobahn sounds like fun, but Germany is heavily populated and full of cities, seems like going 200/300 kph wouldn't be as thrilling as it could be if you could only do it for 15 minutes to a 1/2 hour at a time.

It really depends on the time and place, and there's always lots of construction. My standard speed is 100 mph usually.

They used to, and they used to have many little local festivals throughout the year, in which beer and/or wine flowed freely.  I hope old buzzkill isn't going to ruin this one, too!

He should be out drinking with his neighbors, at some festival or other.  If he does not do that sort of thing, then I think he is an unpatriotic German!  It is his civic responsibility to drink at local gatherings.

When I was there for a few weeks, I attended a street party in one little town, and a bonfire gathering elsewhere, which was an all-night party in which food and drink were sold, to raise money for the local volunteer fire department.  It seems like there was some other little gathering to drink and eat together, that I am forgetting about at the moment.  But this was well over 30 years ago, so maybe the young Germans are traitors and don't perform their civic duty of drinking together.

It is something that is celebrated religiously by some of my acquaintances from Munich, so it is not just for tourists. Personally I've never been. But I've been to the Hofbräuhaus a few times Smile

Since I come from the wine country, all villages in the vicinity where I grew up have a Weinfest, and during the Summer there are two every week on
average. This is what that looks like

During the fall we celebrate the wine harvest, and there are specialized festivals for young "new" wine that is in the middle of fermenting.

The wine in Napa are often good, and the trains in Napa are never late, there being no expectation of any ever getting anywhere.
