First collisions at the LHC with unprecedented Energy! (Ask a particle physisicist)

Well, the collider is located in a 27 kilometer long circular tunnel 100 meters under ground. I'm pretty sure that more than a bit of rock crushing occurred when it was dug out in the 80s.

Yikes! In my novel, the evil mage has his collider on a table in his laboratory. will that be a problem?
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

It depends on how much energy you need. If electron pair creation is all you need, a desktop device with tech from 1950 is enough. If you need to make Higgs bosons which requires almost a million times more juice and the like it's more difficult to achieve in a small device. In that case you can read a bit about wakefield acceleration, it can reach huge energies on short distances.

The new data taken in 2016 independently confirm the existence of the Higgs boson. Here's one of the several channels, the one of its decay via Z bosons, from one of the experiments (just to say that the combined evidence from all experiments and ways the Higgs can decay will be much stronger. The data point + error bar at the 125 mark is it. The peak at the 90 mark is the Z boson.

Today, the long-awaited week-long ICHEP conference kicks off with talks on the record-breaking data taken by the LHC experiments this year, dwarfing the performance of the machine of the past years. Is there a groundbreaking discovery in there? People suspect not, because such things would usually have been announced in a special seminar at CERN before the conference. But who knows, maybe there are some exciting developments after all. Stay tuned!

This is, quite seriously, going to be the reason why I wake up early. I want to know!!!

The results everyone was waiting for - what does the 2016 dataset have to say about that fluctuation at a mass of 750 GeV which could have ushered in a new era in fundamental physics if it was really from a new Boson?

The blue line @750 is what got everyone excited last year, the red line is the 2016 data that got presented roughly 1 minute ago. As flat as Holland. Black smoke rises over the CERN chapel, non habemus bosonum.

Okay, I don't understand any of this.

Is that a bad thing?

As a hornisome enthusiastical turtley reptile I feel confuz about particle physics and its implications.
