Here's part of your problem.
Atheism has very little to do with reasons why you don't 'need to believe in god', logical or otherwise.
The vast majority of atheists are such because the case for the existence of a god has not met its burden of proof. Not wanting or needing to believe in a god or not, has almost nothing to do with it. It is purely a byproduct of skepticism.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
