Any Hearthstone players 'round here?

RE: Any Hearthstone players 'round here?
I got into Infinity Wars for a bit too. One of the reasons I quit? There's an ability called flight that allows creatures to bypass most other creatures and attack your life points, and there's a faction that's based around that ability.

I've played a couple tournaments of Magic, and it was way too hardcore nerd for me. A lot of the nerds around here are insufferable. I just do not fit in with them, so I stick to casual play with people I know.

I used to feel that way too, just as I was starting to learn the game; wouldn't constant access to my opponent's health pool just lead to everyone ignoring the monsters and going for the face? There are decks designed to do just that, which is why I hate fighting the Hunter class, which is specced to do constant damage to the player every turn, but for the most part it's less of a concern and more of a balancing act. You have to find a sweet spot between keeping up your own damage capacity, and limiting your opponent's; that one turn cooldown upon playing most monsters means that an opponent with a few good removal cards and a cheap monster of their own can keep your board entirely clear, while leaving theirs free to attack, if you're focused on just dealing face damage. It's sort of a crippling flaw, if your main strategy can be foiled by a spell card you can play on turn two. You play a really close game, if you're both expecting and playing face damage decks, it's not a worthwhile investment.

Nowadays the game focuses around favorable trading, where you play monsters that can take down two or more other monsters before getting killed itself, in one form or another. My Paladin character accomplishes this through midrange creatures with offensive special abilities that trigger when I have a dragon in my hand, my Rogue rushes the opponent with cheap mechs while buffing them with a specific monster that only does that, my Mage keeps the opposing board clear with removal cards while doing scratch damage with a few cheap monsters before paving the way for the big guns by the end game, and my Warlock... well, I haven't figured out Warlock too well yet. Tongue But the taunt mechanic is less of a weakness than you'd think.

I think the last deck I played was with the Orc warrior that could give himself two armor, and monsters that had charge or taunt. Also to be honest, I'm not really great at PVP games like this anyway. Although I remember a Pox Nora match where I lasted against someone with a superior deck mainly because of my stealthed units. I don't always come up with great strategies, but if I can find a viable one then I'm ok.

I've played a pokemon simulator too, but the problem with pokemon is that it's gone six generations without ever expanding the number of team members or the number of moves each pokemon can know. You can't really protect yourself against all strategies. Even discounting the cheatsy ones like FEAR Rattata.

I love watching the Hearthstone games Esquilax plays.. Especially when it's versus a Priest! Angry
I'd like to check out Magic: the Gathering. I'd love to play one of the card game versions with some friends around the table too, but alas.. You all live all skitter skattered far away..
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

The problem you will find with M:TG after playing hearthstone is the "mana" issue. Although magic is much more in depth (not to mention way, way more complex at a fundamental level) it does have an inherent problem which games since have totally sorted out.

In HS, you generally just get 1 more maximum mana each turn. In Magic, instead you have "land" cards as well as creatures and spells (and some other stuff). You lay down the land cards, and use them to generate the mana. The problem here is that you can draw too few or too many land cards, leading to not being able to play your cards at all before losing, or having so much land you don't have enough other cards to win. Most of the time games work Ok, but it's really frustrating (especially in a fucking tournament!) when you draw just one or two land and then just sit there being able to do very little while you get clobbered.

However, it is an amazing game and it's well worth a try Smile It kept me enthralled for many many years. Another big difference, which newer games generally avoid also, is you can interact on your opponent's turn a lot. This makes the rules much more complex which is why I think it's been avoided mainly now.

You may want to check out a Duels of the Planeswalkers, it's a sort of beginners version of M:TG at a reasonable price. M:TG online is pretty intimidating, but has the full rules in place. It also requires much more investment. And of course you can buy physical cards which is all I actually did when I used to play!

RE: Any Hearthstone players 'round here?
That reminds me of the Yugioh card game, where you have to sacrifice lower level cards to use higher level cards. This should discourage people from having a bunch of high level cards, for the most part. Of course trap and spell cards can make you go from winning handily to losing the whole match in one turn, as well. You played a card that sacrificed thousands of lifepoints to summon a level 3 monster, attacked the face down card which turned out to have an ability that destroys whatever card attacks it, or sends the attacking card back to your hand, and your amazing start goes down the drain.

The computer did this on turn one once. It was the most epic fail I had ever seen. Then in turn 3 he summoned another super powerful card by sacrificing a dark and light element monster from his deck (the two cards involved in turn 1) to still beat me. Because the computer is a cheating bastard who refuses to lose sometimes.

Oh yeah! I played the yugioh decade duels as well and got quite into it. I even wrote a guide for it on gamefaqs! Also for the duels of the Planeswalkers games, and some other games in the past.

If anyone wants to walk down my memory lane with me, here are the guides I wrote:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/users/Robvalue/c...tions/faqs

Yugioh is absolutely mental, it's like m:TG on speed. For those that know what I'm talking about, most creatures are free to summon, have haste and trample, can attack whatever they like and can hit you for 25% of your health Big Grin game can be over in a flash. I made a wicked gladiators deck that was a lot of fun.

RE: Any Hearthstone players 'round here?
I started playing about two months ago. I stopped playing for the past three weeks, so none of my decks are higher than level 15, and in rank 25 for now. I play WoW much more than Hearthstone. My handle for both is Veradas, if anyone would like to play against me or with me for either one.
