As a young guy I love lots of older rock bands - I've been listening to a lot of beatles' songs lately. What was it like to live when they were popular and presumably everyone was crazy about them? And how do you feel about the fact they wrote so MANY love songs?

You mean the boop-boop-be-doo-I-love-you shit?  Marketing.  Teenage girls were their biggest fans.

It was a weird time.  I remember in 1965 a buddy of mine and I drove down towards Shea Stadium in NY where they were performing out of curiosity.  We parked the car several blocks away and we could hear the shrieking.  We got as close as the elevated subway station which overlooked right field at Shea.  They were performing at 2d base.  Couldn't hear a thing except the girls screaming.

It was weird.  But it was a weird time.

It's noticeable in live concerts footage.

Apparently shrugging off the uptight, paranoid, ultra patriotic 50's induced a lot of hysteria. But that at least paved the way to the era of free love .. not that I got any.

My parents were pretty firm about being a hippie was about the worst thing you could become.

Guys that looked like girls, girls that looked like men were a close second.

Our family was Methodist, and mom was pretty serious about it, but we were OK with our catholic relatives. Not sure to this day how that happened.

I think I had an aunt and uncle that were atheist, but that was NEVER discussed. My aunt would go to church with us when they were visiting (they lived 1500 miles away, visits were very infrequent) he never did. If they were atheist, I'd suspect my uncle's legendary cheapness played a large part in it.

I've mentioned before, my mom had a special horror of what other people were thinking about us. In reality, I think more people should have been worried what my mom was thinking about them.
