Welcome Aaran!
I am a recent addition to the atheistic ranks and have found the folks here to be quite helpful and informative. Plus they are good for at least a laugh a day!
You sound very interesting and I look forward to reading about your take on things.

Welcomes! I'm at the end of God Is Not Great and The God Delusion is a next priority on the list
Thank you! I preferred the former myself. Dawkins is good, but Hitchens is a poet.
He sure is! I practically swallowed it whole, his style is so captivating. Since you say it was Dawkins that deconverted you, I have a good feeling about The God Delusion, it might be just what I need

On my reading list right after The God Delusion

Welcome Aaran! Glad you kicked that "awful sobriety" habit.

When you said your grandfather and father drink, you also mentioned you read the god delusion which changed your life.
For some reason, I put 2 and 2 together and come to the conclusion that that is why they drink! They also came to this realisation as you have!
You have a cool but crazy family! hehe
Interestingly enough ignoramus, they are both atheists, the only two in my extended family except for myself. Its almost as if alcohol possesses hidden properties conducive to godlessness.
But the real reason for their drinking is a little more cliched - its the wives. My people's culture is an odd one, patriarchal in all respects, except in actual practice.

Welcome!
Alcohol does have special properties:
The Secret to a Long Life
If in the end, you found that god really existed...
I do, however, recommend keeping it in check, and never drink just before or while driving or operating dangerous machinery.
If you are still single, hopefully, you can avoid your father's and grandfather's fate by being careful about this marriage thing. For me, it was the best decision of my life, but for many, it is the worst decision of their lives. For the most part, it depends on you and who you marry, whether marriage will be good, bad, or indifferent.
And when I was a child, I thought about becoming a preacher myself, though I was a protestant Christian. But my doubts and final rejection of religion ended that thought.
I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Welcome Aaran.
Finally! Someone who can draw bearded men. Yes!
Maybe we'll see some good muhammad drawings in the future.
