You ever try listening to the Christian rock or Christian praise music, if not you might be in for a surprise at the talented people involved. Not your everyday beat out a few cords with the volume so high you can't hear all their mistakes kinda' rock n' roll. Good solid well composed music with many different and great instruments blended together. The band "New Songs" earlier CDs remind me of the old rock band "Chicago" when it comes to using a multitude of instruments in their music. "Chicago" was a highly liked and talented band during my teens and early twenties a band I enjoyed very much and still have a real respect for their talents. If you are truly a lover of music then you should find some Christian bands to your liking, unlike some of the tone deaf kids who think a repeated cord and a pluck or two is all it takes to produce music, oh yeah the volume has to be up in the range of critically damaging the ear drums of coarse before they see it as music. Not that I do not like to play my music with some volume to it, I do come from the age of Rock&Roll.

Really? Name some.
Phil Kegey for one, wasn't all that long ago he was at the birthday party of Paul McCartney's daughter (an invited guest) and he and Paul did a jam session together. Kegey has been called one of the best guitar players ever and this from his peers. Kegey himself has named many Christian guitarist as outstanding.
Don't believe me check the net, I invite you to do so.

Good solid well composed music with many different and great instruments blended together. I've listened to more American contemporary praise music than is good for me (and why would you think we haven't). Much of it was professionally crafted, with harmonies and instrumentation like out of the textbook, if that's what you are going for. At the same time it was so saccharine and one-dimensional that it gives me cancer.

Of course one should always use ear plugs when going to hard rock concerts in the widest sense. But coming back to the nicely composed harmonic worship pop music - it ironically completely lacks soul, it sounds to me like the mindless drone from a worship drone that is on an unnaturally perpetual high and can't get down. That "pluck or two" on a string contains more music if it comes from the heart than a tonne of impeccably (over)produced sterile worship drivel.

Religious people - Which music is pure?

I was a worship leader for three progressively modern mega-churches for almost 10 years, recorded on several albums and have played with iconic musicians from around the works so I know all about "worship music" as well as just about every mainstream Christian artist out there. There are some good artists, yes I'll give you that but the majority of them are in the Christian music scene because they couldn't hack in the real music world.

Is the "real" music business is set up such that the best musicians are the most successful or such that being an excellent musician at least guarantees you some level of success?

To some degree yes. Don't get me wrong there are very talented Christian musicians in that industry and some that have even successfully crossed over but the majority are pigeon-holed when they are in there. It's odd and difficult to explain.

Do elaborate if you feel like it, I'm fascinated by that kind of "scene" stuff.

They're not. You obviously don't understand what "often" means. You gave one example of a virtually unknown niche guitarist (yup - I'll bet you every single person, who read that post had to google him - and you can't even spell his name correctly), who may be technically good, but has no record of any music that's widely known. And where are all those non-christian-rock artists citing him as inspiration/influence?
Most of the nonsense about him on the web was clearly fabricated - like the stories about Hendrix calling him "the best guitarist in the world", which he himself admits are not true. So what if he's a mate of Paul McCartney - obviously he's not good enough to have played on any of McCartney's albums. Or albums of any other artists recognizable without googling.
It should be easy to list a number of christian rock musician, who influenced mainstream rock music - if that actually happened "often". Sure - there are plenty of musicians who are also christians, or otherwise religious, but they keep that to themselves, because everybody knows, that if the word "christian" comes before "rock" - then it's most likely to be proselytizing crap, trying to indoctrinate young people, by mimicking their culture. And sure - there have been very few musician who managed to break from CR into mainstream, but notice how they all stopped bringing attention to the "christian" aspect of their music as soon as that happened. Also - most of them were still crap - like Creed.
As for you telling me "what's good" (either in the context of ethics or aesthetics):

Well I would be lying if I said I was a big part of the scene but I have been involved in a small corner.
The Christian music scene is geared toward soccer moms who support Christian radio so in a sense they influence, somewhat, what is played. There are some people who truly "try" to be good in the sense of their overall worldview but it's plagued by the same shit as the secular music scene. Lots of sex, drugs and rock n roll. Lol. The differing views on God are much like you would see Ina forum from believing to atheist. Hell Newsboys founder George Perdiki just came out as an atheist earlier this year.
The CCM formula had its genesis with label heads learning how to sell to the adult contemporary home. Worship music became the staple more than a decade ago. It's all geared to be hip enough for a soccer mom to think its edgy. You never see bands trying to be adult contemporary...but the artists on top of the mainstream charts are people like Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Maroon 5 etc. and these are the artists that CCM mimics because it's what makes money. They push artists into this back stream of what feels like old, stale music because it's safe. It's all about the dollar. As an aside KP is one of the few if not only artist that started off Christian, failed, crossed over and made it huge. Joy Williams had a semi-successful run with The Civil Wars but that bottomed out.
