Religious people - Which music is pure?
#41
RE: Religious people - Which music is pure?
If I go out of my way to listen to Christian praise music, it will be red-blooded, full-throated Gospel music, not the anodyne crap that is passed off as Christian rock/pop. The examples of the latter I've heard on the radio are uniformly bland and uninteresting, and that's just on the musical level; don't get me started on the cookie-cutter lyrics.

Give me Mahalia Jackson and the Staples Singers any day.

The band U2 has Christian members guess you will have to mark them off your list.

You do not seem to understand my post.  U2 does not advertise themselves as a Christian rock band.  They don't do that because they don't need to do that.  They are good enough to sell their music anyway.  Christian rock bands that are complete worthless garbage advertise themselves as "Christian" in order to sell to people who wish to make sure that they are avoiding "bad" influences.  If they were actually good, they would not need to advertise themselves as "Christian."  If they were actually good, then people would buy their music without such a gimmick, without that special advertising to get into a niche market.

That's about ridiculous, they are telling people who they are and what they represent. If what you say were true the rock bands would have never had to call themselves rock band, their music should have stood on it's own merit and wouldn't have been pointed directly at a new audience, Kids. U2 doesn't hide the fact of Christian belief either. As I stated earlier there have been many musically talented rock bands, morally most leave not much to be desired for the Christian.

You're still insisting U2 is a Christian band?

Because having an orgy with crack whores is the mark of a good Christian man. Bono might make a big deal of his dealings with the third world and be generous in his handouts, he might even have included a few divine references in one or two of his songs but hey so do most Artists. You gonna try and tell me because Lady Gaga sang Alejandro she's now a Christian Pop genre singer? I mean she even banged a crucifix while doing it, that's gotta be extra points right?

I never said U2 was a Christian band or that most of the members were Christian, I give Bono the benefit of doubt because of his claim, I do not know that much about the band.

Well I would be lying if I said I was a big part of the scene but I have been involved in a small corner.

The Christian music scene is geared toward soccer moms who support Christian radio so in a sense they influence, somewhat, what is played. There are some people who truly "try" to be good in the sense of their overall worldview but it's plagued by the same shit as the secular music scene. Lots of sex, drugs and rock n roll. Lol. The differing views on God are much like you would see Ina forum from believing to atheist. Hell Newsboys founder George Perdiki just came out as an atheist earlier this year.

The CCM formula had its genesis with label heads learning how to sell to the adult contemporary home. Worship music became the staple more than a decade ago. It's all geared to be hip enough for a soccer mom to think its edgy.  You never see bands trying to be adult contemporary...but the artists on top of the mainstream charts are people like Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Maroon 5 etc. and these are the artists that CCM mimics because it's what makes money. They push artists into this back stream of what feels like old, stale music because it's safe. It's all about the dollar. As an aside KP is one of the few if not only artist that started off Christian, failed, crossed over and made it huge. Joy Williams had a semi-successful run with The Civil Wars but that bottomed out.

Hrhr, I only know the Newsboys from a God's not Dead review Smile Was that guy in it?

So there seem to be different strands of praise music. On the one hand the close harmony singing our god is an awesome god with some band accompaniment, and on the other hand the Christian Justin Timberlake knock offs? I suppose the latter is worse because it is intentionally neutered music

... then, what's your point? There were some of saying that if a band needs to label themselves "Christian", it usually means they suck, and your answer was basically "nuh uh! You guys can't be U2 fans anymore because they're Christians!" And then when pointed out to you that U2 doesn't label themselves a Christian band, you said you didn't claim they were.

WTF??
Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.
