Prayer is one of the most ridiculous facets of religion in my opinion. I've tried getting an answer about what exactly people hope to achieve, but it seems even the people doing it don't actually know.

Yes, the bullshitters never seem to have an adequate answer for that.  Whenever there is some tragedy and they start with this praying shit it is appropriate to ask what the fuck they are praying for?  Do they want god to undo the event?  That seems reasonable but if god gave a rat's ass wouldn't he have taken care of that in the first place?  Or are they praying for the souls of the dead?  But what good does that do?  The issue is not HOW they got dead but merely the fact that they are.  Their admission to heaven or hell is dependent on their life up to that time. 

They don't seem to have this prayer shit thought out at all.

In (not) all(, but slightly more) seriousness, I think what your friend might be doing is confusing, say, respectfully clasping my hands in front of me and closing my eyes while everyone else prays (which I'll do, say, at a funeral) with actually praying.

Apparently there are some atheists who pray as some sort of meditative exercise, but I'd think it's pretty uncommon. Maybe your friend mistakes bowing your head out of respect for actual praying.
