I said to my friend "I hope we're not forced to pray". To which (suprisingly, as this guy is quite intelligent usually) he said, "Atheists pray anyway so what's wrong". This really annoyed me. I started to explain to him how Atheism is a lack of belief in a God and how praying is apparently talking to God, then Atheists can't talk to something that they don't believe in. Then obviously he started to attack me (verbally) with stuff like "praying isn't religious" or "atheists pray out of respect". I mean I just got so fucking pissed at this guy. He held onto his claim ever since even after telling him the dictionary definition of Atheism.
I might be wrong on this which I don't think I am but please write your response to this anyway.
Thanks.

I don't know about atheists praying exactly but I think praying, OCD rituals, primitive superstitious behaviour and things like this are all interlinked and I do think I have a kneejerk primitive reaction in me that causes me to do certain things.  It's very rarely anything that you would notice as being praying.

With me it's things like I like to park in the same place outside work because it might give me bad luck if I do something different, Sometimes I do say under my breath "Please god no."  But I don't do these things out of respect and I do think praying is religious. It's stupid, usually ineffective and linked with OCD I think, socially acceptable OCD.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Prayer is an activity encouraged by clerics, costless to them, in order to:
allegedly avoid an infinite harm (hell)
and gain an infinite good (heaven)
as long as you also contribute 10%.

How can this not be seen as a scam?
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat? Huh

With all due respect to people with OCD, repeating old patterns can alleviate anxiety, or at least, prevent its occurrence. By doing so we repeat a known good behavior and avoid facing the unknown. But then we also repeat things, sayings, rocking like a baby, etc. in order to calm ourselves, so maybe I haven't got this all figured out. But repetition does seem to allay anxiety.

I had a neighbor who claimed to have saved a premi-baby's life with a single prayer. It was hard not to bitch slap her when she told me that. Arrogance beyond measure is Christians greatest treasure.

I think most Christians would be offended by that, "by thine power and glory not mine" and all that. Pride's not cool yo.

It boggles my mind that religious people say just the most ridiculous things about atheists. It's almost as if the idea of someone not believing in God is mind-blowing, so their brains scramble to rationalize it by assuming things like we're all just pretending not to believe in God.

Let me guess.  There were no doctors and incubators involved?   Some asshole just prayed and nothing else was done, right?

"I hope that my short term desires are met regardless of the effect on everything else. Amen."

Ahem.

So this would be an atheist prayer: "Hey, just in case you do exist and you are listening... just fucking sort it out OK. I'm getting tired of all the suffering on this planet."

Praying is magic thinking. It's the regular sort of thinking that gets the job done.
