Queensryche circa 1985 was considerably grittier. They really went progressive-metal after that.

For me it's that dirtiness. Like with Lamb Of God, you wouldn't say they lacked that bulldozer element, but their later albums lost a lot of dirtiness; that sound of the pick scratching against the strings, or a little bit of feedback. I fell off with them once you could barely tell they were playing guitar. I don't like my metal to be too polished.

Exian,
You think the problem is in the production?
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Yeah, probably. That's most likely the cause of their later sound, but it's also a bit to do with branding. LOG branded themselves as American Metal, and traditionally we've been pretty dirty, a la Burn the Priest, New American Gospel, and As the Palaces Burn. More concerned with attitude than perfection.
Granted there have been some crisp American metal bands, but I associate that more with the Europeans, which I do like when it's branded that way. I even like it when an American band does it as their style and as advertised. But given a choice, I'm more likely to gravitate towards a grittier sound.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."
For context, this is the previous verse:
"Hi Jesus" -robvalue

With crisp and clean, I automatically think scandinavian power metal. Generally much of the Nuclear Blast fare.
Damn I love LOG Ashes of the Wake though

This is a great point here, yeah. The little incidentals really make it, for me.

Well, if I'm being honest, I'm probably not being fair to LOG. Ashes of the Wake is the last album I bought of them, so I really shouldn't be speaking past that. That was the album that I started noticing how polished they were, and only sampled their newer stuff. That being said, I loved that album too. I listened to it forever, but on reflection, my favorite times were their earlier stuff.

I don't listen to a lot of Aerosmith but I like this song.
