I learned to use a gun long before I learned to drive a car (and I got my driver's license the first month it was legal for me to do so). That is what real Americans do. Held by a civilian too. That's the most mind boggling thing. Like, I've only once or twice seen cops in the UK carrying guns, to see a civ with an assault rifle is truly bizarre.
Yeah, the only people I know who own guns are usually hunters or have a special permit for some specific activity that requires guns - Additionally some guns like ones with rubber bullets used for specific purposes do not require license. But "true" firearms? Hell no, I don't know anybody b sides cops, soldiers and intelligence services that owns a gun. It confuses the hell out of me as well, but whatever floats people's boats.

The problem with your thinking is that the military is made up of these same hicks. The size of the military pales in comparison to the civilian gun owners. Take away the ones that would not turn on their own and you have a small force to go out and hunt the hicks.

Well technically we just weren't that bothered about a few rowdy rabble rousers and gave up more because we couldn't be arsed, than because we legitimately got our 'asses kicked'. I mean, we did have the largest empire the world had ever seen, it was probably a bit greedy of us in the end.

I agree, it's fairly stupid that people would shoot themselves and/or others. But then, I'd question the logic of allowing such fools guns in the first place.
