I live in Oregon, one of the few places where ALL beaches are national parks, so everyone can use them without paying. Lucky me, seriously. I've lived right on the Oregon coast too. It's such a beautiful place, I'm glad anyone can come enjoy it.

When I first started surfing, in my teens, I Paddled out too far and, while lying on my board, saw movement in the water beneath me. It was a bloody big shark, far larger than my board.
I swear I broke all records getting back to the beach that day. Don't know what type of shark it was, but it (figuratively) scared the crap out of me!

Question for Beccs though, not aimed at you but just generally, why do all these people surf where they know damn well there's sharks?

That place where that surfer almost got gobbled the other day, apparently that's an area known for sharks, it's common there. So... why would you surf there? Maybe I'm a pussy but if I know there are sharks in that water I'm not going within 10 feet of it, God no, I value life too much thanks.

You surf where the swell's good. You'd understand if you were a surfer.
I've never been a very good surfer, so a couple of years ago after an old dude got eaten by a shark, and after I was body surfing and got pulled under by a rip, I got scared and stopped going in the ocean further than up to my collar bone. Real surfers live to surf.
I think I've just renamed it the "no true surfers" fallacy

It's always been a risk, but shark attacks used to be very rare. They've become more common as sharks have moved into shallower waters in search of prey. Perhaps if we stopped overfishing their feeding grounds...
But then, ask yourself why people bungee jump or do anything else that's risky?
More people have died climbing mount Everest than have been eaten by sharks while surfing...

omg That sounds so grim  I'd be traumatised
I get that you want to go where's there's a good thrill but I just don't think it's worth it, maybe they do. I feel so bad for saying it but I can't help thinking people a bit... dim, for going where it's common knowledge there's sharks.
This is just my opinion obviously, I don't mean to offend surfers but still
I think you're brave just going in up to your collar bone, I won't go above waist level. I'm not a fan of the water.
@beccs - I guess so. I just get this real mistrust of animals. They eat anything without hesitation haha
