Charlie Hebdo victimizes free speech.

RE: Charlie Hebdo victimizes free speech.
Sometimes your life just becomes more valuable than criticizing and mocking religion - It's survival instinct.
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

Indeed they do, but one single magazine can't really make a huge difference, if the entire French media decided to show these cartoons it would have a great counter effect, but they didn't - Few media outlets in the world showed the cartoon. I prefer to preserve my life than to die fighting for a great cause, even if it's really a brilliant outstanding one.

And so the terrorists win.

You can't have it both ways.

If they had stuck to their guns, they could've inspired countless others (like myself) to stand up and join the mockery. I still openly mock moho regardless, but they could've inspired enough people to stand up that way the terrorists would have to back down for a change. You are right. One single magazine can't do that. But but if they had not censored themselves, who knows how many would be willing to stand up and say "I will not surrender to terrorists!" You have to understand, the only reason that that religion, no, cult, even got to where it is in the first place, is because of the fact that it was spread by the sword from the beginning, and, in the same way Christianity was, and thanks to Al Qaeda and ISIS, it's still happening that way.

I agree with you there, but the problem with is that it would mean that the terrorists have undeserved power, and although this sounds like a slippery slope fallacy, I still believe that by giving the terrorists what they want, which is censorship, that opens up the door to fatwas against others who mock Mohammed, thus making it impossible to criticize things that need to be criticized and could ultimately slow down the progress of mankind. Like I said, I probably presented a slippery slope there, but I feel that by doing what they did, this is how it could go down. It's definitely possible.

They needed everyone else to step up and print tons of cartoons too, to create more "targets" than the nutters could hope to deal with.

And there is little in the world that needs criticism more than fucking islam.

Yes, the terrorists win, but only to the extent that the common defense and civil law enforcement fail to adequately protect those rights. If it is left up to individuals and institutions to fend for themselves then it is only reasonable to allow them to fortify themselves against such attacks, i.e. conceal-carry and licensed security.

So, why not install heightened security? For example metal detectors at every entrance to the building, and hire armed security guards, which IMO is what every major company needs. That way the odds of this happening again are greatly decreased. Nobody needs to censor themselves to stop violence. That's a coward's way out IMO. Hire people who will defend your company's rights, not just lawyers. Sure, it will cost more money, but don't they make a lot of money? They should be able to afford these things.
