christian looking to understand athiests

RE: christian looking to understand athiests
I was brought up Christian all my life, eventually got older, started to question and think for myself, and the inability of people who believe being able to explain away the inconsistencies led me to where I am today.

Hello and welcome!

Contrary to these other PC laissez-croire folks here I have a strong interest in converting you to atheism. You see, it looks like there is no Christian God and I wouldn't want you to believe something wrong about such an important issue, now would I Smile
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Yu shouldn't be that defeatist. It's no fun if you're not going to argue a little. Tongue

I'm an atheist because when I reached adulthood I took a hard look at a few of the bible's major teachings, and asked myself if I really accepted them. Do I really accept the idea of killing an innocent person or animal to absolve me of wrongdoings? Spilling innocent blood doesn't make me a better person. It makes me worse. Killing a sheep on an altar, praying over a goat before chasing it off into the wilderness, or brutally murdering a guy, doesn't make me more clean. If I'm doing it to satiate the bloodlust of some more powerful entity, then why am I willingly worshiping such an individual?

I was raised in the idea that there's a pit of fire waiting for me if I don't jump on the bandwagon. Created by the guy that's supposed to be "saving" me. Saving me from what? Himself? That sounds more like blackmail. Punishment is only constructive if it helps convince you to be a better person when you come out. Eternal punishment has no constructive purpose since you're never getting out.

The most common interaction Yahweh has with people is killing them, sending followers to kill them, or threatening to kill them. He also seems mre preoccupied with making sure consenting same sex adults do;t make love to each other, and what people eat and wear, than he is about people being treated like chattel.

I have no idea what an "athiest" is. The state of being the most athie?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I was an atheist until I found the one true god, The Flying Spaghetti Monster and he forgives you for picking the wrong god.

RE: christian looking to understand athiests
I was raised Christian and believed pretty devoutly for much of my life. As a young child I was actually more skeptical, but then I eventually let it sink in and started using the full force of my intellect to do enough mental gymnastics to make the Bible agree with science (at least in my head). After enough learning and life experience, my critical thinking skills eventually trained themselves on this problem, and I started to experiment with judging God's existence and historicity the same why I judge the existence and historicity of everything else. When I realized not just that there is no evidence for any gods, but also that there is evidence to suggest that they're all fictional constructs, I realized my beliefs were completely irrational and indefensible. That's when the last brick of my faith finally crumbled.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

Welcome. Spend some time looking around. You'll find all kinds of reasons and answers.

My reason is simple. Anything else makes absolutely no sense.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

i see that most of you believe what you do because of lack of evidence that there is a God. Personally i am a christian because of all the evidence ive seen and the ways ive seen him answer prayers. ive had people come up to me and pray for problems that i was having that i hadnt told anyone. ive had many prayers awnsered in ways that could only be explained by God. I also completely understand everyone heres point of view

Only explained by god? What's a god even?

Yeah, to be "explained" by something you can't see or detect in any way whatsoever is a pretty poor kind of explanation.
