I used to feel exactly the same way when I was an atheist. I just didn't want there to be a God, and I would go out of my way to make science and other data fit my atheist beliefs, and would ignore any rational points made by theists that pointed towards the existence of God. But this is before I realized that God is not as black and white, and simple as atheists paint him. (This magical and supernatural being that created the world, kills children, and wants us to worship him.) There's more to understanding our complex God, and there's a purpose for everything.

I know a lot of atheists are atheists because they dislike the idea of there being a God. But after gaining more understanding, I now feel just the opposite. I not only believe in God, but I love the idea that he's around.

Good for you Great. But if by "God" you mean "Yahweh," then I'll pass.

Quote: 23And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

24And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

25And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

I don't think you can make science fit a belief. True that it's based on an observer , and that can lead to minor bias, but that's usually weeded out through repetitive peer review and reevalutaion.

Strong disagreement!

I'm not trying to make science fit my as you say "atheist belief" for which isn't a belief. I lack belief.
Also rational points made by theists that point to god's existance? Where!? I have yet to see a good point that points towards god. I don't believe in god because there is no evidence to suggest that there is one. There is no credibility. I'm not an atheist because I don't like the idea of god existing but because I really don't believe that there is one.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

@Ace, just for clarification my comment was pointed at Angel's comment, not your ace. I didn't think you would do that, not do I think atheism is a belief you can attribute any positive action to.

I know. Big Grin

Some theists have no understanding of atheism, like AngelThMan.

Theists only really annoy me when they can't keep their beliefs to themselves, comment and criticise atheism without actually knowing what atheism is, claim we don't really lack belief in god (which is no differant from me saying "they don't really believe in god") and assume we don't understand religion/god.

I'm curious what "science and other data" you are referring to here. I don't know of anything that you have to "make fit" an atheist belief. It is the creationist crowd that twists things around to make evidence coincide with their beliefs (The Grand Canyon proves Noah's flood! Fossils of sea creatures found on mountains proves Noah's flood! Cave paintings prove man lived with dinosaurs! etc...)

Quote:and would ignore any rational points made by theists that pointed towards the existence of God.

Give me a rational point that "points toward the existence of God".

Quote:But this is before I realized that God is not as black and white, and simple as atheists paint him.
(This magical and supernatural being that created the world, kills children, and wants us to worship him.)

Well, according to your own book, doesn't this magical being kill children and demand that we worship him?

Quote:There's more to understanding our complex God,

A being that indiscriminately kills innocent people and demands worship... sounds like a psychopath to me.

Quote:and there's a purpose for everything.

Ah, yes... one of the favorite platitudes of the faithful. If this is true, please explain the "purpose" of Adolph Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, Hurricane Katrina, the recent earthquake in Haiti, the 9/11 disaster and Paris Hilton.

Quote:I know a lot of atheists are atheists because they dislike the idea of there being a God.

Oh, what crappola! Someone is not an atheist because they "dislike the idea of there being a God". Someone is an atheist because they see no evidence of the existence of a god. Do you not believe in leprechauns because you dislike the idea that leprechauns exist? Or do you not believe in leprechauns because you don't see any evidence that they exist?

Quote: But after gaining more understanding, I now feel just the opposite. I not only believe in God, but I love the idea that he's around.

Some kids have invisible friends that they like having around. Doesn't make them any more real than your god.
Science flies us to the moon and stars. Religion flies us into buildings.

God allowed 200,000 people to die in an earthquake. So what makes you think he cares about YOUR problems?

I don't buy this at all. You are drinking far too deeply of the Kool-Aid to have ever been an atheist in my opinion. Perhaps at one point you were angry with your pretend deity and wanted to deny his existence, but I do not buy that there was ever a point where you honestly did not believe he did.
