Tbh I'd be surprised if he's even heard of Durkheim. Another interpretation might be the Jungian collective unconscious, but I doubt if he knows anything about Jung either. Iirc 'collective consciousness' is also a term used by transcendental meditation weirdos and other similar fruitbats. I strongly suspect that its the very wooly 'new age' meaning of the term that is being employed here. Thus my comment about it sounding like gibberish.
