I saw an episode from the documentary makes VICE on this topic.

It was basically showing the Muslim groups over there who are over there and are supposedly allies to America basically just seemed to be making fun of the Americans, taking their money, using their ammunition and running away with it.  Some of them were sex offenders, heroin addicts and obviously didn't care about any military missions.

I don't understand why America is pouring money and resources into a country that is halfway around the world from them.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Jon Stewart had the best coverage of the ISIS vs. Al Qaeda issue:

A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

There are better ways of getting Pyrrhic  victories for our abundant enemies than what the US normally works at, that's for sure.

Easy, the US Military-Industrial Complex has to be sustained somehow, and without a scary enemy to convince us all to keep handing over our tax dollars and borrowing money from other nations, we'll never keep our forces high enough to maintain our economic hegemony and domination of the poor nations who are the sources of the resources (human and material) that we exploit.

"In 2011, the United States spent more on its military than the next 13 nations combined" (Source)

Wag the dog. Wag the dog. Wag the dog.

Thought I'd add this, (former head of our armed forces in the biggest war in our history, mind you) President Eisenhower's farewell address, in 1961, in which he warns about the dangers of the Military-Industrial Complex:

Sadly prophetic.

How so? I think the region was destined to devolve into civil war regardless of what we did.

From a purely Western perspective, removing Saddam wasn't the best idea ever. Which has been foretold by anyone really knowing the region. Also the idea of blindly supporting the insurgency against Assad by bombing his forces wasn't born by the brightest minds either. Again, from a purely Western perspective. And one could argue that with Saddam and Assad firmly in power, less people within the region would have died. It certainly would have been as easy for ISIS to take a foothold.

But if we're talking Western stupidity, it already started in 1979, with the blind support of what was called freedom fighters against the Soviets in Afghanistan. And which turned out to be the breeding ground for Al Quaeda.

All born out of criminal ignorance of the region, the different ethnicities and their conflicting interests. And it continues, with the latest stupidity of showing Erdogan support when fighting the PKK. The same PKK, who is violently opposed to ISIS and fought them off at Kobanê. Weakening them is strenghtening ISIS. But no, we don't negotiate with terrorists, don't we.

I agree. The specter of conservative islam has been a growing threat since the early 20th century. There may have been additional flashpoints recently in the last couple of decades of so, but that exportation of extremism from the Saudi peninsula was occuring anyway and there's no sign it would have abated with or without Afghanistan and/or Iraq.

If we should have supported anyone, it should have been the Kurds and the secular voice that was strong in the initial months of the Syrian uprising. Instead we in the west chose to do nothing, and they were all murdered or are fleeing to Europe (God knows the al saud's don't want any intelligent educated people questioning their theocratic dictatorship).

This is a good book by a great author (Jason Burke) who I'd recommend immensely on the subject:
