That's not being an atheist though, that's being professional.
You said atheism should be mandatory, not scientific skepticism which is a given for the field.
It should be mandatory when you're inside the lab. Your beliefs are simply not gonna be compatible with the scientific process and method. Everything else is secondary.

I didn't get the point of the piece. It's like he started out wanting to say something anti-religion and then just dribbled off.

To believe that everyone should think like you is the reason the world is torn apart. I find this idea abhorrent and ridiculous not to mention it lacks scientific basis as some brains have a tendency to embrace the supernatural regardless of the evidence (otherwise the percentage of elite scientists who believe in god would be 0%, but it isn't).

Someone should tell Krauss, that he should stick to what he knows best. It is the Dawkins effect.

My fiancé is a scientist, a microbiologist. She's got research to get on with and doesn't really care about it.

I don't really understand the criticism of Krauss here. If you're a scientist, you should treat religion in the same way that you treat other claims. He's basically saying that in doing just that he's been labeled a militant atheist, and that other scientists, instead of adhering to the principles they avow, have discouraged him by either remaining silent or vocalizing their disapproval of his efforts.
So, what's the problem?

Doesn't surprise me. If Christians can make great scientists, why not a religion obsessed anti-theist?
