Someone pointed out recently that Daesh have a core membership of around 35,000 in Syria and Iraq, but the surrounding Islamic nations have around 5 million military personnel.
If the locals powers wanted to, they could likely crush the group - except for the insurgent members who would hide and then attack like cowards - in a matter of weeks with a co-ordinated ground campaign. But, of course, the situation and the chaos suits their long term plans.

I don't know. If ISIS is gaining a foothold, it may be best to help in some manner, wouldn't it? The last thing we need is them overrunning another fractured country.

Even picking a 'right' side doesn't seem to score points with (supposedly) simpatico Muslims in other countries who will still want to fuck us despite our helping their putative allies.
And any authority figure we try to work with is likely corrupt and/or working both (or all 3) sides of the street, and our help will unpredictably (well, for me, PREDICTABLY) piss off some/most/all other factions and we'll have to put up with their retaliation too.
And don't get me started on the fucking Saudis . . .

Surprisingly, what you all left out of the equation is the simple fact, we're still talking about sovereign states. Failed states in some cases, but still, another power invading or even bombing, is an act of war. So it's not that easy and clear cut as 5 million soldiers versus 35.000 insurgents. That simplistic line of thinking, helped in the creation of ISIS.
