It depends on what position I am in.
As the cheerleading coach, I've had to deal with parents who didn't want a lesbian on the cheerleading team. I told them "If you don't want your daughter on the cheerleading team because there's a lesbian on the team, that's your choice. It would be disappointing to not have her on the team this year. As her parents, it's your right to tell her not to join. I'm sure that it would upset her. I'm not going to kick anyone off the team because someone else's parents wants them kicked off. I doubt you would appreciate it if I kicked your daughter off for that reason. So I'm not going to do it to someone else either. "
As someone who's not really in a position to say something, I tend to ignore them and try to cut them out of my lives. I know a few people who are fairly racist. I do my best not to associate with them unless i have to.
If they say something to a friend of mine, then I will most certainly speak up about it. Regardless of position of power.
