The problem with that is that our health care system is so fucked up that most nuts never get anywhere near a shrink to be diagnosed as mentally "ill."  It's only after the event that you look back at what the guy was saying and doing and realize " that motherfucker be crazy."

Reagan's disemboweling of our mental-health system in the 80s ... chickens coming home to roost.

Lol! I don't condone it. I was just saying that anything less will not realistically identify all of the potentially violent mentally ill.

Truth be told, I don't think that kind of screening would work well anyway. The issue is complex and the solution is not readily apparent to me.

Today is a sad day for the families and friends of those who lost their lives and each of us here should be more concerned for them than any argument we perceive to be the cause, each of us should find in our own ways to take a little time and keep these people at heart, they are suffering greater than any of us as far as I know.

But that's the thing, when this kind of thing happens over and over again and we do nothing to fix the problem, the lone maniac is not the only one responsible.

Yes, true society has a responsibility to recognize and help these people before they do harm, but who today really cares, today's society is more about self until something like this happens.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Certainly believing in god did not help them, so that must mean something.

Many of us cotton to John Donne's verse:

Quote:No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manor of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I care, because each of these acts say something about my tolerance, my lassitude, my willingness to accept the unacceptable.

I get that you are making comment on society at large, and it is indeed a cruel and heartless beast. But it is no excuse.

I'm disturbed that it seems natural to consider the amount people who were put at ease when they found their values among the dead?

In a colloquial sense you are correct, however, I think that if we're talking in clinical terms it's not so simple. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure killing ten people doesn't automatically make you mentally ill. I bet his method probably indicates some mental illness, however, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has gone undiagnosed. But I don't think it's correct to assume at this point that he was for sure mentally ill.

A fair point; I'm certainly being colloquial in my use of the word "derangement", rather than "mentally ill".

Assuming his mental illness is an easy thing for me to do, and your point is well-aimed; however, I do think that the weight of experience gives my own point (and the others who have made similar points) more heft. After all, mass murder is not normal behavior; the assumption of derangement seems fair simply because the behavior is so out-of-bounds.

I'm not talking in clinical terms, because I don't have the education, authority, or experience to do so.
