Latest Texas School Board Idiocy
Texas has left the science books alone, but now they're attacking history. Essentially, certain people on the school boards are pushing forth right wing ideologies on history, basically trying to remove parts of history that don't mesh with their white Christian Nation preconceived notions.

One example of what they have done, is remove Thomas Jefferson in regards to his writings that influenced the Enlightenment and instead insert people like Thomas Aquinas (He didn't even live during the Enlightenment!!) and John Calvin. Also they're not referring to it as the Enlightenment.

They also removed César Chávez who was an important Hispanic figure.

Here are some links with details:

http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010...hoolbooks/
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/...29320.html

What is extremely frustrating about these changes is that Texas purchases a lot of text books and as a result the changes they make affects the rest of the country.

What is truly strange is that they are allowed to do it... rewriting history has historically been a thing that most of the people weren't aware of occurring... to see it actually supported by 'the people' is a rather disturbing change of pace Sleepy

Not all Texans agree with the turn of events the Texas SB is taking. However all protests seem to fall on deaf ears. If this gets pushed through it will take a decade to fix this mess again.

Ah, no wonder these fascist morons hate Jefferson!

Why are people so surprised? Such reactionary behaviour is utterly predictable in a state which already tells official whoppers about its own history.

I was a little concerned about the notion of one unchangeable history. The study of history not only always remains open to change, there is also usually more than one way to interpret the evidence. EG I do not subscribe to 'the great man' view of history, preferring a more holistic approach.. In my opinion, to understand the history of any former colony,it is also necessary to understand a bit of the history and culture of the founding country.

People do not learn history at primary or even secondary school. If they are interested, they are introduced to the discipline.

So says the....

(I'm convinced I'll get warned or banned for completing that comment of mine. Somehow I think it's going to be O.K. for Sae to label me fat or pansy but if I retalitate in kind, I'll be in trouble.)
And Cesar Chavez may have been important to the hispanics but he was far from worthy of "historical" mention. He was just another union founder/leader, nothing more.
I used to tell a lot of religious jokes. Not any more, I'm a registered sects offender.
