You know I suspect dogs and many other mammals have experience more like our own than not. But I don't think they have the specialization we do in an independent conscious mind. It is probably this which leads to questions of free will.
I think they are to be envied for not being buried in language the way we are. They don't narrate their experience or confuse words with things themselves. An independent conscious mind is a great thing to have, so long as it doesn't have you by the balls and make you mistake itself for you. Being human is a challenge.
