Don't tell a Religious person "There is no God"
#31
RE: Don't tell a Religious person "There is no God"
I usually take the time, when presented with that little carrot, to explain why I am both an agnostic and an atheist.

I am agnostic because I cannot say if one of the nebulous concepts of the Deist god might be in fact correct; I do not think it is possible for humans to know the answer to this question.

I am atheistic because I have heard the various stories told by mankind, and I find their definitions to be obvious fantasy, usually just the projection of human prejudices and fears onto a super-Alpha-male concept, a basic form of chimpanzee-thinking, so to speak.

It's really that simple, and while most theists object to their ideas being presented in that way, I've found few of them who take issue with my atheism after telling them that. Online, of course, the trolls can get sticky with those definitions, but in real life I've found people outwardly to be much more reasonable about it.
A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

Most of us agree, but don't you need to define what god is before you can reject it?
God is mother nature, the natural universe, or maybe Kevin the programmer from the year 15,000?
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.

Most of us here are 6 on the Dawkins scale and the claim is almost invariably made by the theists trying to put words in our mouths than as per the OP.
If pushed I'll rule out the biblical deity as utterly false as the text (OT) itself is a forgery circa 450 BCE.
In my experience you'll get a hostile reaction (from baptists) to anything short of a confirmation of their own beliefs (including 'agnostic', non-believer' and 'non-religious') so attempting to molly-coddle them is an utter waste of time.

You know, most of the deists I ran into when being a deist myself where thinking the universe to be the deity and themselves being part of the universe in a never ending cycle. Totally neutral, totally uncaring. In fact,, that's what ultimately led me to atheism, since an uncaring and neutral deity wouldn't care about worship.

But that's still the only kind of deity, for lack of a better word, I find remotely possible.

Deism still strikes me as being akin to worshiping the strong nuclear force...

Quote:In my opinion, and in the best interests of helping other religious peoples understand our belief, I think people should refrain from saying "There is no God"

But I don't say that.  My position is that there is no evidence for any of the gods which humanity has invented...especially this judeo-xtian-islamic scumbag of a god as it is portrayed.

All I was saying is that you can't know to a certainty, I'm not saying it's likely to be correct, only that it technically can't be disproved.
