Don't tell a Religious person "There is no God"

RE: Don't tell a Religious person "There is no God"
"There is no God" is an empty statement, as I take the statement on its own, it's a claim to certainty, an absolute, no better than saying there is a god. It's a philosophical dead end. The idea of God is preposterous to me, but outright claiming that there is no God is intellectually dishonest, because as stupid as the entire concept of an omnipotent humanoid entity may seem to any flatworm with a basic education in common sense, you can't KNOW it isn't truth. Certainty is the death of thought.

So I suppose you're uncomfortable with statements like "There are no fairies." then?

You can't prove non-existence of anything. You can always find or make up ways in which existence of any particular thing (like god, yeti, or pink unicorns) can be possible, even if no one's ever perceived it, demonstrated it, or even thought of it.

Go on - try it. Prove that one thing - anything you want - DOESN'T exist. I'll wait...

I see no value in asserting my personal beliefs in that manner. Proselytizing is annoying as shit no matter which side of the fence you are on.

Well, OP is either one of those thinking to be part of some organised group/religion by being an atheist. Or he falls into the troll/Poe category. He made that pretty clear in his opener. Both options are equally unappealing to me.

One can be both agnostic and atheist.

As far as I know, I have never encountered a gnostic atheist here (although I have in other forums). Strong atheists, yes (I believe there is no God). Not gnostic, though.

Actually, when it comes to specific gods I am a gnostic atheist. When talking about a being in general for which it would be appropriate to call them god, then I'm agnostic, because it is possible that such a being exists, though under our current knowledge of reality quite improbable.

The reason why I'm gnostically atheist wrt yhwh and his two bastard children god and alllah, thor, zeus, aphrodite, brahma and all those other gods is that it is clear when you examine the mythos behind each of them that they are figments of human imagination, stories used to explain phenomena beyond the grasp of the people who invented the stories or to excuse the worst excesses of the human psyche by showing so-called greater beings being just as bad, or simply invented to bilk the gullible out of their monies. It doesn't take much to disprove a specific god, a thorough understanding of their holy books or stories is enough.

Exactly the same with me.

There is no god and I'll assert this position until someone produces one. This epistemological nitpicking solves nothing.

Nice quantified response. What about other than "celestial"? What about out side the solar system? What about anywhere?
