Songs That Have Made You Cry
#21
RE: Songs That Have Made You Cry
As someone who has lost a number of friends to the AIDS epidemic, lost before there was something that could be done about it, this song inspired by the death of one of their multitude has always moved me especially deeply.

I told the priest, "Don't count on any second coming,
God got his ass kicked, the first time he came down here slumming.
He had the balls to come, the gall to die and then forgive us.
No, I don't wonder why; I wonder what he thought it would get us."

Hey, hey, goodbye. Tomorrow, Wendy's going to die.

Only God says, "Jump", so I set the time
'Cause if he ever saw her it was through these eyes of mine!
And if he ever suffered,
It was me who did his crying.

I feel the same way about "Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen. I love any song which can tell me a story and make me feel  what the other person felt, even if it is pain, sadness, and looming death. Music is so powerful.

A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

I've never cried while listening to a song (at least, not because a song stirred up those kinds of emotions in me), but I did listen to this one a lot when my oldest brother was diagnosed with colon cancer a couple years ago:

This Queen song is forever associated with the Highlander  movies/series, but I think that doesn't do justice to the beauty of the lyric poetry that is this song... I've always considered it something of an "atheist anthem", if there is such a thing.

There's no time for us
There's no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams,
Yet slips away from us?
Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever?
Oh, oh.

There's no chance for us
It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us.
Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever?
Oooh..who dares to love forever,
Oh, when love must die?

But touch my tears with your lips,
Touch my world with your fingertips,
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today!

Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever?
Forever is our today--
Who has forever anyway?

(Edit To Add: I notice that this video ends differently than the album version I quoted, but I'm leaving the video up because seeing them doing the live show = awesome. The album ending is so beautiful to me, though. There are some copies of the recently-remastered edition on YouTube; worth seeking out.)

How did I forget this one?

And, I seem to choke up regardless of who sings it, the Hawaiian version, or even the one at the end credits roll on Taxicab Confessions.

I also choke up watching Judy (as Dorothy) singing it with the sound off.

And who can forget Mr. Green Jeans?

On a more serious note, Bette Middler singing "The Rose" used to do it for me.

I used to sing that at Karaoke with my friend who was the karaoke dj. It was a real shock the day we found out he had passed away due to a heart attack. His daughter found him in his room wedged between the bed and a small side stand.

Songs that get to me are Broken Wing by Martina McBride, Wonder by Natalie Merchant and She thinks his name is John by Reba McEntire.
