RE: The Tower of Babel
I think the message of the story is pretty clear, actually. The Gaud of the Bible fears men, especially what might happen if they band together and think for themselves. He's not offended at their arrogance at trying to reach Heaven; he legitimately says "If we let them work together, there will be nothing that they can't accomplish. I will confuse them so the can't understand each other." The only reason he confounds the languages of men is to divide them because he wants to limit their capacity to accomplish things on their own. In short, he is fostering dependence on himself and limiting man's capacity to outstrip their need for him.

Really, though, the story was meant to shame the people away from getting together and realizing they didn't need the priests or their bullshit any more. This is why empirical knowledge and human cooperation have always been religion's strongest enemies, especially in tandem.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

The story is etiological.

It attempts to explain in terms which primitive humans could understand how things came to be.  In this instance, why do different people speak different languages.  Sadly, we still have primitive humans ( are you listening, Hugster?) who need such bullshit reassurances.

For that matter, imagine a jewish exile seeing Babylon for the first time.  Coming from a poverty-stricken shithole and suddenly being exposed to the grandeur of such a city?  The Ziggurat must have been awe-inspiring.  The ancient Greeks developed a similar myth of the minotaur and the labyrinth after seeing the palace at Knossos.  To a country bumpkin who lived in a mud hut it must have been mind-boggling.

Aside from the examples given on the website, the myth of sodom and gomorrah also fits into the pattern of etiological mythology:  "Grandpa, grandpa, what happened over THERE?!!"

Its all horseshit made up for gullible fools.  They are still with us, today.

I certainly agree that this is a major component to the origin of this story, and at the same time I still see elements of the tale geared toward the discouragement of free thought, organizing toward humanistic goals, and cooperating outside of religious control. I think the people of the cloth knew exactly what they were doing as they nudged the story along toward what eventually became the written version.

The only flaw is trying to convince a dumbass like you that your fucking bible is a worthless piece of shit.  However, the opportunities to insult you and it simply cannot be passed up.  Call it a hobby.

The book of Genesis was written around 700 years before any Jewish exile stepped foot in Babylon....

Wait.  Yes I can.  Grow up, Hugster.  You do not know what the fuck you are talking about.

Go learn some shit about ancient history and archaeology..... yes, you may have to put your stupid fucking bible down...and get back to me when you are done.  In your case it should take about 20-30 years.

The Early Bronze Age cities of Mesopotamia were stricken by the same drought which brought down Old Kingdom Egypt around 2000 BC.  The Chaldeans brought about a brief revival... 14 centuries later.

How is this relevant to what I said?

Just clarify something, What is your exactly is your position on Abraham and Ur?
And how is Abraham relevant to the Tower of Babel?
The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

I may defend your right to free speech, but i won't help you pass out flyers.

Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.
