Should driverless cars kill their own passengers to save a pedestrian?

RE: Should driverless cars kill their own passengers to save a pedestrian?
I don't think these questions are very sensible.
If you're deciding how to program the car based on this incident then surely program the car to not go very fast around corners with hazardous cliff edges.  So fast that in can't even stop for objects or people that might be in the road.
Either the car should be programmed that way, or the kid ran out in the road so fast that the car couldn't stop in which case the kid gets killed anyway whoever's driving or whatever is programmed into it.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I was watching one of those plane disasters documentaries and these pilots were talking about a crash on takeoff that had occurred because the other pilots were talking to the stewardess rather than paying attention to flying and forgot to set the flaps.  As they were talking about these other pilots, they forgot to set the flaps and crashed on takeoff.

In what way is this not representative of human failure?

What we'll find (when looking), is that operator error (read: human) is much more prevalent in aircraft mishaps than the autopilot.  The fact is this, the autopilot, is a better pilot, the crushing majority of the time, than a human pilot.  I would expect the same of cars that drive themselves.  They don't get tired, they don't get drunk, they don't text their buddies.

But airspace is a comparably trivial place. If air traffic were anything like city streets, autopilots would have a horriffic track record, i'm sure.

Back that up?  Then, for extra credit, show me that their horrific record is (or would be) worse than our own?  We use machines precisely -because- they are better than we are, at what we use them for. Your brain was "designed" to operate a vehicle the size of your body, and most of us are plenty clumsy regardless. You telling me, that you think, something that was -actually- designed to operate a vehicle would be worse at it than something that wasn't...and often fails to adequately operate what it -is- rated to handle?

Hal, take the wheel.

Take the black ice as an example. The cars would be programmed to reduce speed under those potential conditions so even if there was a pile up, injuries should be minimal, unlike a human driver that would diregard those conditions and maintain speed.

I'm just saying if the sky were full of confused pedestrians, drunk drivers and the possibility of other planes suddenly coming around the corner or unpredictably stopping in front of you while a playing child runs in your way, current autopilots would be catastrophic.

You mean..if the sky were full of human error.........you'd favor yet more potential for human error........

I see at least two missed the point.  It was absolutely "representative of human failure".  That was the intent, as there have been several comments addressing the potential computer errors and personal discomfort levels with a device that does nothing but it's job, the dialog was intended to showcase the human error involved in contrast to Homeless Nutter's comfort level with an autopilot which would not be engaging in conversation, but rather doing it's job and putting the fucking flaps out.  If there had been an autopilot in control, those two flights would never have crashed.  There was no defect in either plane prior to the crash other than inattentive pilots.  I would probably start flying again if autopilots were in control.

(I forget sometimes that a thesis needs to be attached to my comments.)

With all that said and done, back to the OP, what would probably happen is the "blue screen of death" and everybody would die.  Tongue
