Would you date a christian?

Define practicing/faithful.

If she thinks Her belief suits herself, but mileage can and should differ according to the individual, then no, it is not a deal breaker.  If she thinks what she believes is the overarching truth applicable to everyone and others would be morally or fatewise less for not believing the same thing, then that absofuckinglutely would be a deal breaker.

If she tries to convert me, then that would be a deal breaker.

So in short, it's not being a Christian that creates the disability, it's being an asshat that does it.

Dating could be an issue.

Wonder about banging one?

Voted not a dealbreaker, because I could probably date a casual Christian. Chances are, he wouldn't stay one way too long anyway.  Wink

Wouldn't date a man at all if I caught so much as a whiff of fundamentalism though, but that type normally isn't interested in me either. I have met a few that have expressed interest, but they were the rescuing type. It was clear to me that they felt I was in need of saving/major adjustment.

Why begin a relationship with someone who thinks that your fundamentally flawed and in need of a complete overhaul from the start? No thanks. I'll pass on that.

I am pleasantly surprised by the answers.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

That's almost exactly how I feel about it now.

I'm saying I almost certainly never would. I'm saying basically I wouldn't but never say never. I couldn't 100% rule it out and I assume you are saying you do, but I basically never expect to make any exceptions.

As a general rule it's "never", "no way", "not happening", "not in a million years" but I still guess I couldn't rule it out completely *shrugs*

That's why I put "other" but I could have almost as easily put "it's a dealbreaker." Generally it is, for all realistic intents and purposes it is.

Except asshatery so intrinsic to Christianity it would take some degree of intellectual dissonance to consider oneself a Christian without feeling obligated to be an asshat.

Not that intellectual dissonance in that case would not improve the individual, or rather would not prevent the individual from being further unimproved by Christianity.

It opens up a debate to what a practicing faithful Christian is, how they interpret the bible and so on.

The two women who I dated who definitely expressed their Christianity to me both had sex with me on the first night we met, to me that's not being a practicing Christian though, that's just stacks of bullshit.

That's bullshitting to yourself and other people that you really do believe in bullshit when you actually don't and you're just bullshitting.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Well, my mother's devoutly Catholic and my father's an atheist.

Both kids are now atheists.

I honestly don't see why it can't work so long as there's understanding and tolerance.

I suppose....

If someone was nominally a Christian, but was so liberal that they didn't take it very seriously at all, it could work. I think it's the worshipping, submission, and thinking morality can and should come from religion that would cause me big problems. Also the idea that people who are not part of the religion deserve lesser afterlives.

In the case of Christianity, there's the added problem of accepting vicarious redemption and the belief that we are inherently broken and in need of fixing. All of these things are fundamental differences I don't think I could overcome in a long term relationship.
