Russia has always been a country ruled by tyrants. Their history is fascinatingly harsh and bloody, and Putin? He fits their culture. There's a lot more complexity behind where Russia is at right now (economically, the story is really not good)... but:
Even if Redbeard intended it as a throwaway comment... he is right. Russia deserves Putin.
And you know what's interesting...? Russia may even need him. Putin HAS done great things for Russia... But he's also failed greatly for Russia in other places... misplays following good plays.
...
His being a tyrant... doesn't mean he isn't a good leader. He is a thug. He is harsh. He's hardly good for Russia's image in 'the West'... but he has to be, he has to be, and doesn't have to be.
I did actually have something like this in mind when I made the joke. Good lookin out.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/ja...s-to-vodka
Article Wrote:"Russians clearly drink a lot but it's this pattern of getting really smashed on vodka and then continuing to drink that is dangerous," Peto said.
"The rate of men dying prematurely in Russia is totally out of line with the rest of Europe," he said. "There's also a heavy drinking culture in Finland and Poland but they still have nothing like Russia's risk of death."
Alcohol has long been a top killer in Russia and vodka is often the drink of choice, available cheaply and often homemade in small villages. Previous studies have estimated that more than 40% of working-age men in Russia die because they drink too much, including using alcohol that is not meant to be consumed, like that in colognes and antiseptics.
Drinking is so engrained in Russian culture there's a word that describes a drinking binge that lasts several days: zapoi.

We know. What you seem to not know is that Russia's culture would be like that with or without Putin's helping it along. Russia being anti-gay isn't a Putin thing...
It is considered anti-Russian to be gay. A western phase eating its way into their traditional standards.
Russia shares more in its culture with saudi arabia than it shares with the united states. They have connections to the west, STRONG connections... but they will NEVER acknowledge them.

He is a leader of a country with a dying economy... and he's still making gains for his country. Short term gains, maybe... but his country is very much behind him. He is very popular. He is very powerful.
In Russia? He is awesome. That is how people say he is a good leader.

I just find it rather insulting that people would say that he's a good leader.

Insulting to whom?

He's a fucking psychopath... Do you have any evidence of this?
