Kids should be learning about worthwhile topics not crackpot cults like Islam and Christianity.

Yes, but it doesn't hurt to have an informed opinion. They shouldn't learn as in here's something you should subscribe to. But they certainly should learn what makes other cultures tick. Ignorance is one of the main factors that led us to where we are now.

The assignment was an attempt to indoctrinate the kids into Islam by getting them to write their oath of allegiance.  The teacher should be terminated and never hired again in any public school in America.

No, it's not and yes they over reacted, but how would you feel if your kids were forced to write or recite the lords prayer at a publically funded school?

So, let's give an example. If there's a calligraphic excercise to copy parts of a medieval prayer volume, I wouldn't bother. In fact, I did that too as a school kid, again, not as an excercise, but because I always was fascinated by the artful writing of medieval books and documents.

If, and that's a real example, a school invites a so called christian rock band to play at a school function, we have a real problem.

That's my distinction.
