Wrong forum?

RE: Wrong forum?
Oregon microbrewries craft some great beers here in the NW. They also make some vile stuff called barley wine that is sickeningly sweet with a terrible aftertaste. It blows my mind the lack of selection when I leave Oregon. I would like to go to Germany and check out their beers. I've heard they are best served just below room temp from a hand drawn cask.

Rhiz, you just made me think of a question that was brought up to me a while back...

When you stated:

Quote:just below room temp

Ok people, I've heard so many temps in concern with this. From the serving of "Beer" to "Wine".....

What is considered "Room Temp" when associating Wine/beer.....?

Rather depends on where the room is located.

Room temp(RT) is usually somewhere between 73 and 77 degrees F or 23-25 degrees C. This also applies to metrologies where I work. Smile We usually start temperature based experiments at RT which is 25 degrees C (Ambient is usually below that but the machine will equilibrate at a RT of 25 to keep things simple). Our climate chambers are sometimes held at RT which is 23-25 depending on which engineer is requesting the experiment.

Min you are talking about ambient temperature which is a very literal way to interpret RT but not very useful when trying to communicate between areas of the world. I wonder if there is a spec. around this...

Yes there is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_co...d_pressure

Temperature is not an acurate enough way to assure that values from different datasets will match, so pressure must be accounted for. The problem with NIST's definition as well as IUPAC's is that STP is always below ambient so that presents a problem for test equipment that is not enabled with some form of chiller. For this reason, we adhere to the rule of thumb of 25 degrees C being considered RT within a temp controled building.

I imagine that bars and pubs have mush less stringent controls and much less need for their, uh, datasets to match so RT is whatever the hell their place is kept at, wheather permitting. Smile

Rhiz, in my line of work (Chemist), all of my testing is in a controlled environment of 22C..(71.6 - /~ 72)

For everyone out there that reads this next part, please do not condemn me too much...Tongue

What I had been told in the past, on many occasions, was that in consideration with "Wine", room temp was to be between 63F - 65F (17C - 18C).
It was told to me by many a' Frenchman....lol..
