If someone can be ignored, then I don't generally hate them (despite my jokes about carts in the shop etc.)

It is the in-your-face disrespect and obnoxiousness that you CAN'T escape that makes someone especially loathesome, isn't it?

RE: Hate
Hate never creates progress. This can be confused with "What you're just saying we should love all those murderers to progress??!?!?" or something of that nature. However what it really means is that you don't have to hate people to take action against them, Hate and Love are not the only two options. I'm not saying it's wrong to hate terrorists either, i'm saying that it doesn't accomplish anything, taking action against them accomplishes something, and hate is not a requisite to take action.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. - Martin Luther King, Jr.

I feel like people think so linear, it's either love or hate, "Martin luther king is saying to combat the hate of a terrorist we should love them?!?"

Other peoples Hate shouldn't stop us from loving others, indirectly, or directly. Hate if you want, but it's not accomplishing anything.
Which is better:
To die with ignorance, or to live with intelligence?

Truth doesn't accommodate to personal opinions.
The choice is yours.

I respectfully disagree.  Hate can be one of the biggest motivators.  It can push up that barbell once more in training.  It can shave a few seconds off your mile time.  It can cause you to make the ruthless business decisions that will allow you and yours to profit.

Hate, like any feeling, can overcome one.  But no less harm comes from excessive love, from excessive fear, or from excessive lust. In short: it's good to be human, but not too much.

Anger can me a motivator yes, fear can yes, hate? No. Hate is self-destructive at best and destructive to self AND others at worse.

IMHO.

RE: Hate
Hate is an emotion just like any other.  In certain situations, it's useful.  For example, if someone what trying to rape someone I love - - I'm going to hate them.  That gives me the fuel to do whatever I have to do to stop them.   Of course, "stop" probably would mean "chop up into dog food" . . . so hate might go a bit overboard.

And that's the problem, particularly when hatred becomes constant, and an obsession.  Someone described hatred as picking up a hot coal to throw at your enemy.  You get  burned too.  But if you keep holding on, you destroy a part of yourself.

RE: Hate
I think hate always goes beyond what is required and useful.

I think that hating someone who is going to rape someone you love, is an unnecessary sideeffect--I think you're already going to do everything you can to help your loved one without needing to hate the rapist, the hate for the rapist is just an additonal sideeffect of your reaction to their horrific assault.

I think even without the help you would do everything you could to stop them and help the person you loved, but without the hate you might not for instance.... chop them into dog food, as you say.

That's a good example actually with the "chop into dog food" thing. The way I understand hatred is it's incredibly deep and always goes beyond being useful.
