It's definitely a good thing to tell someone first dealing with depression, and anyone suffering from depression too, but part of the problem is that depression leaves you feeling hopeless and the thought of trying to cope with it is overwhelming. I think the most important thing you can tell someone is that it is a long process and not to expect to be able to cope with it overnight.

Well, I think everyone can cope with it at some point. I feel like if I can do it, just about anyone can.

I have the same problem, believe it or not. You should just constantly occupy yourself with something until you forget about it for long enough to have a good time, then start all over again. In other words, write, or do whatever else, until you make it out of it. Believe me, it works.

Look, looking at one of your replies here, I can see you're causing the problem yourself without even knowing it. Try taking your "recovery" seriously, on a personal level, and you might be very surprised with the results.

Lol, I had been in three mental hospitals, tried a dozen medications and went through one suicide attempt at your age, EP. I'm 36 now.
I know what I'm doing well enough to know I don't need platitudes from teenagers.

You've no right to complain that people aren't being real when you treat people who display vulnerabilities this way.

I think you don't and I'm sorry to see you're unwilling to take what may be a simple advice, but nevertheless a good one. By lingering on it you're causing the problem yourself without even knowing it because you feel like it's too much a part of you to let it go and you feel like a fake if you pretend to be another person in order to overcome it.

Yeah, you're about ten years behind, EP.

I've been dealing with depression longer than you've been alive, EP, so think about that before you decide to derail my thread again.

Is that your learned medical opinion, Doctor?
