He probably had somewhere to go, and probably rushed off there.
To confirm, just go back to the cemetery right now and see if he is still there waving.

I mean like, he got off at a really straight road. If he were fucking with me he'd have to run back a few kilometers to even hide from my sight!! I was suspicious when I first looked back through my mirror because it was night and people tend to make mistakes with what they see at night. That's why I got off and looked back. Nobody.
